COVID-19 and elderly/geriatric/aged patients – pubmed results

CONCLUSION: The trend of mortality in individuals with both Alzheimer's disease and Diabetes Mellitus has increased in the past two decades, but there is a sharp rise observed after 2020 that may show the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings emphasized public health strategies.
CONCLUSION: While glycemic control remained stable, severe hyperglycemia increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among Hispanic/Mexican American and Non-Hispanic Black adults. Higher education and older age were associated with better outcomes, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address disparities and prevent hyperglycemia.
SARS-CoV-2 infection triggers a strong inflammatory response, and persistent symptoms after recovery are thought to reflect prolonged systemic dysregulation. However, mechanisms underlying long COVID remain unclear. This study evaluated longitudinal changes in cytokine hematological and biochemical parameters up to nine months after hospitalization for COVID-19 and examined their relationship with persistent symptoms, vaccination status, and the occurrence of comorbidities. Long COVID patients...
Background/Objectives: Secondary bacterial infections in subjects hospitalized with COVID-19 are associated with longer hospital stays and an increased risk of death. Thus, identifying the risk factors associated with bacterial complications in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection is clinically important. Methods: We analysed the collected records of all adult patients diagnosed with an acute COVID-19 infection who were admitted to the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Warsaw, Poland, between...
Background and Objectives: Macroeconomic instability, particularly income loss, inflation and unemployment, is increasingly recognized as a psychosocial stressor that may influence both symptom burden and healthcare-seeking behavior. This single-center study investigated the association of income, inflation and unemployment with private-sector hospital visits for primary headache disorders and assessed whether economic stressors were associated with different patterns across demographic groups....
Background/Objectives: Perforated peptic ulcer (PPU) represents a surgical emergency with substantial morbidity and mortality. Despite declining overall peptic ulcer disease (PUD) incidence, contemporary population-based data comparing outcomes between perforated and non-perforated PUD remain limited, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and economic burden of PPU and identify independent predictors of adverse outcomes. Methods: We conducted a...
Background and aim Obesity is strongly linked to elevated blood pressure and increased cardiovascular risk. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists have gained attention for their role in weight management and potential cardiovascular benefits. Evidence in nondiabetic populations remains limited. The aim of this study was to descriptively evaluate the association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels among nondiabetic adults with obesity....
Severe hyperglycemia during acute COVID-19 infection is an uncommon but clinically significant presentation. Here, we present an unusual case of an 82-year-old COVID-19-positive man who presented with severe hyperglycemia following several days of COVID-19 symptoms, with an admission HbA1c of 14.7%. He received standard treatment for a working diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), improved clinically, and was discharged after five days, but continued to require exogenous insulin to maintain...
COVID-19 has altered the epidemiology and clinical course of viral keratitis, with increasing evidence of herpesvirus reactivation after infection or vaccination. HSV keratitis remains most common in younger-to-middle-aged men, while HZO predominates in older adults and around one-fourth of HZO patients report current or prior COVID-19. HSV cases frequently recur and complications such as corneal opacity and neuropathic pain can cause vision outcomes ranging from normal to severe loss. Large...
CONCLUSIONS: Among elderly hospitalized patients with COVID-19 during the Omicron period who received systemic corticosteroid therapy corticosteroids combined with antiviral therapy were associated with lower in-hospital mortality compared with corticosteroid monotherapy, while no significant difference was observed in mechanical ventilation.

Since Dr. Phillip Hench reported on the efficacy of glucocorticoids for rheumatoid arthritis in 1949, glucocorticoids have saved many lives and have offered relief to countless patients. Glucocorticoids have been used as the mainstay of treatment for many immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including polymyalgia rheumatica and giant-cell arteritis (GCA), owing to...

One way to classify acute ischemic stroke is by the anatomy of vessel occlusion. Initial randomized trials of endovascular thrombectomy focused on large-vessel occlusions.1-5 These proximal occlusions of the intracranial carotid artery or the stem of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) represent the most severe form of anterior...

Among patients with stroke due to medium-vessel occlusion, thrombectomy led to functional independence at 90 days (in 58.6% of patients, vs. 46.6% with medical management) but also to a higher risk of intracranial hemorrhage.
