COVID-19 – Pubmed results

The paper builds on the classical understanding of the interplay between material processes and political conflicts, but generalises it in several key respects. This approach does not assume relevant political-economic aggregations ex ante (such as industries or 'classes'); rather, it explores different possible ways of aggregating social groups and defining their interests depending on the situation under investigation. Moreover, interdependencies in the economy impose the need to keep...
CONCLUSIONS: Further mitigation and suppression measures are necessary in the containment and sustained transmission phases, such as increased diagnostic capacity through testing and disinfection of populated areas and homes in isolation.
CONCLUSIONS: The identified spatial pattern may be influenced by the isolation measures taken at the local and national level, but the effect of the low access of the general population to diagnostic tests, delays and restraints to know the results cannot be ruled out and even possible biases due to difficulties in the technique of taking the sample or its conservation.
CONCLUSIONS: The cartographic representation derived from the implementation of a multicriteria model, integrated to a Geographical Information System, in the SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk analysis, constitutes a relevant methodological contribution for decision-making defining strategies of mitigation at the local level, facilitating the location and optimization of resources by the health authorities.
Many health workers in the Americas, especially women, have been victims of discrimination and different types of grievances during the COVID-19 pandemic. These brief reflections aim to make the problem visible, offer theoretical explanations and some recommendations. The pandemic constitutes a massive crisis that triggers fears and reassuring of diffuse anxieties, which often includes someone to blame. Healthcare workers have become circumstantial scapegoating targets. The inflicted attacks can...
CONCLUSIONS: There was prior knowledge that was strengthened by training and it was interpreted that health is a heritage that must be safeguarded with responsibility and biosecurity.
CONCLUSIONS: In the dental profession the potential risk of contamination among operators, assistants and patients is high. Knowing the causative agent and the disease allows you to reduce the possibility of contagion. The dentist must consider patients as suspects to COVID-19 and apply biosecurity at all levels.
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic relies on real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) for the detection of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), to facilitate roll-out of patient care and infection control measures. There are several qRT-PCR assays with little evidence on their comparability. We report alterations to the developers' recommendations to sustain the testing capability in a resource-limited setting. Methods: We used a SARS-CoV-2 positive control RNA...
Team projects and in-class interactions are the hallmark of a freshmen introductory course in biomedical engineering (BME). Our challenge was to continue team activities, mentoring, and the semester-long design project in a virtual environment after in-person classes ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper highlights some of the adaptations required to continue a large (n = 124) team-based course with students located throughout the world. Breaking up planned in-class activities into...

Face Masks

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a global shortage of, and inequity of access to, medical oxygen. Understanding patient outcomes and the capacities of health facilities to provide respiratory support including oxygen is key to matching need and demand. We report results from a global study including 23 low-income and middle-income countries.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that although some determinants are vaccine-specific, most are shared across vaccines. The results offer actionable insights to guide future malaria vaccination strategies. Further research in urban settings and across diverse countries is warranted to enhance understanding of cross-vaccine perceptions and to inform targeted communication efforts.
Face masks are widely recognized as a key intervention to limit SARS-CoV-2 transmission, yet the distribution and persistence of viral RNA across different mask regions and layers remain poorly understood. To address this, we analyzed 185 masks collected from 60 SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals in Rio de Janeiro between December 2020 and September 2022. Masks were sectioned into anatomical regions (nose, mouth, sides) and structural layers (inner, middle, outer), and viral RNA was quantified...
CONCLUSION: The results presented here point to which sociodemographic, health, and virus-related factors are associated with nonadherence to recommended individual behaviors to mitigate the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. However, issues related to the representativeness of the sample for the general population limit the validity of the results.Trial registration: DRKS.de, German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS), identifier: DRKS00024046, registered on 25 February 2021.
CONCLUSIONS: In general, although face shield use increased susceptibility to COVID-19, it decreased case fatality rate in the Philippines. However, a more robust and controlled study in the future may be needed to truly justify its recommendation for the public.
CONCLUSIONS: Policy makers should be aware of adverse impacts of mask-wearing in mental health settings and consider these in evolving risk-benefit analyses. Further research is needed to establish the extent of impacts on population subgroups.
Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, personal protective equipment, particularly face masks, has been central to infection control and reducing associated mortality. Global mask mandates, combined with widespread vaccination, helped curb peak pandemic phases. In 2023, the WHO reclassified COVID-19 as an ongoing health priority rather than an emergency, prompting reassessment of mask policies in healthcare settings. Yet, hospitals remain high-risk, especially with...
CONCLUSION: After the COVID-19 onset, face masks became mandatory across Asia, especially China. Surveyed individuals (98%) agreed that proper mask use is crucial for prevention. Mask wearing is now a societal norm. While masks reduce COVID-19 transmission risks, they also present drawbacks. Addressing these challenges, particularly in educational settings, is essential for comprehensive public health education and adaptation to new health practices.
This paper introduces an innovative silicone-based semi-transparent face mask prototype, to cope with limitations of the standard face masks massively adopted as individual protection devices (IPDs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the prototype aimed at complying with health-related requirements while preserving the maximum amount of visual information from facial features during social interactions, which is critical for vulnerable populations such as young children, and people...
