Reflective Reading for Nurses & Midwives @ eLearning Room

This session is aimed at nurses and midwives undertaking NMC revalidation by providing attendees with 2.5 hours of valuable CPD!

It will give nurses and midwives the opportunity to read, discuss and to critically reflect upon a published paper using a set of guided questions led by a library facilitator. Participants are required to read a pre-set paper and to make notes using a checklist prior to attending the session (1.5 hours CPD).

The session is not intended to be an appraisal of the quality of the paper, but rather a reflective discussion with colleagues on the issues and topics presented and how they relate to practice (1 hour of CPD). Attendees will receive a certificate of participation and attendance upon completion. Please note that a minimum number of three participants are required for the session to proceed.

Although this session is primarily aimed at individuals undertaking NMC revalidation, it is open to any nurse or midwife who might wish to participate.

The training is delivered using a mix of facilitator presentation and live search demonstrations, and will be of particular value to nurses, midwives and those working in the allied health professions.

Appraising Research Papers for Beginners – Quantitative @ Virtual

This course is for Trust staff only. All group and individual training will take place remotely via MS Teams, or face-to-face by appointment with the library trainer. To book your place on a course contact the Library.

Not all published research is reliable! If you want to be confident reading and utilising published research you need to understand its content and be able to objectively assess its quality.

Run as two separate training sessions (either quantitative or qualitative), the appraising research papers for beginners sessions will equip learners with the basic theory and knowledge of how to appraise quantitative (randomised controlled trial) or qualitative research papers using a mixture of presentations and practical group work.

Learners are required to read a prescribed research paper in advance of attending the session. A copy of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist will be supplied.  No prior knowledge of critical appraisal or statistical concepts is required.

The session covers the following:

  • Overview of the critical appraisal process
  • Key features of qualitative/quantitative research
  • Interpreting statistics (for quantitative research)
  • Using the CASP checklists to appraise research papers
