Database Information

Following the decommission of HDAS, access to the individual bibliographic healthcare databases is now available  via the provider platforms OvidEBSCO and Proquest using your usual OpenAthens login (Register for an account here). We support users to use these platforms via our Finding the Evidence: Searching Medline/CINAHL training sessions. Check for forthcoming sessions or contact us to book individual training session.

Coverage includes official publications, journal articles and grey literature on: health service policy, management and administration, with an emphasis on the British National Health Service; the quality of health services including hospitals, nursing, primary care and public health; the design and maintenance of health service buildings; occupational health; regulation of medicines and equipment; and social services.

The King’s Fund database contains records from 1979 onwards, mostly with a UK focus, on health management and services, social care, service development, and NHS organisation and administration. Records include books, pamphlets, government reports, abstracts of journal articles, and a wide range of grey literature.

Medline is a general medical database produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The database contains citations derived from biomedical and life science journals from 1946 onwards. Broadly, the subject areas covered are allied health specialties, dentistry, nursing, medicine, pre-clinical and veterinary sciences. It contains a broad range of medical topics relating to research, clinical practice, administration, policy issues, and health care services.

PsycINFO

In addition to high quality psychological content, the database is enriched with literature from an array of related disciplines, including psychiatry, education, business, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, law, linguistics, and social work. Nearly all records contain non-evaluative summaries, and all records from 1967 to the present are indexed using the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms. The sources include professional journals, chapters, books, reports, theses and dissertations, published internationally.

Library News & What’s new

Changes to the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

The NHS Knowledge and Library Hub (KLhub) is getting a fresh look from July 7 with a new and improved user interface. You will benefit from the improved search functionality with it remaining the single-best platform to browse, search and access eResources using your NHS OpenAthens account.

The new KLHub means that there are some changes that you should be aware of ahead of time.  From July any existing search alerts, custom folders and journal alerts which have been saved in MyEBSCO will no longer be available. This will affect items saved in the KLHub as well as EBSCOhost databases. Please contact library staff if you need advice on saving your searches in order to replicate them later.

ProQuest Databases

From July 1st the following ProQuest databases will no longer be available via NHS OpenAthens:

  • AMED, British Nursing Index (BNI), Health Research Premium Collection, PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes, please contact library staff.
